Who is your Beloved? (Part 2 of Who is the Bridegroom?)

By Yolandie Mostert (2 April 2023)

This message is the second in a series about the revelation of the King from a passage in Song of Songs chapter 5. In each message I will be discussing a facet or characteristic of the King.

Before we start with the individual characteristics, we first need context of where we are in the story in Song of Songs. For those that are unfamiliar with this special Bible book, there is a storyline and we can find our journey towards spiritual maturity in each dialogue and event. If you are interested, you can get more information in my book on Song of Songs.

In this midst of Gethsemane

The girl (the bride) is in the midst of a Gethsemane season. This is the place where we have to surrender our will, just like Jesus had to. Gethsemane means oil press and it explains exactly what happens in this garden. We are being pressed by circumstances and by the surrendering of our will, desires, ambitions and plans. One of the purposes of Gethsemane is to produce oil. The olives are pressed in the oil press and releases the oil. The only way to get anointing oil is by pressing.

Something else happens in our Gethsemane seasons. The Lord hides Himself for a period of time. The reason for this is that we can grow towards spiritual maturity. From living on feelings towards living by faith.

Many times when the Lord is busy doing a deep work in us, people will think that we are outside of His will. Job is a very good example of this. Because the watchers that were supposed to guard over her soul misunderstood what was happening in her live, also turned against her. The watchers in Song of Songs represents those in leadership positions. We read in verse 7 that they’ve even wounded her and removed the mantle of protection over her. In Gethsemane we are being stripped of our dependence on people and systems.

This was a very brief explanation of her current state. Her circumstances look outside of God’s will. She doesn’t enjoy the protection of her spiritual leaders anymore. And it looks like the Lord has forsaken her. He is silent.

Search His heart

Yet, amidst all of what is going on, she is searching Him. Not His hand. She doesn’t ask for relieve. She is searching for His heart. Just listen to this beautiful statement of hers: her only message to Him is that her deep longing for Him is making her feel lovesick.

I charge you, O daughters of Jerusalem, If you find my beloved, That you tell him I am lovesick! (Songs 5:8)

When it seems like God has abandoned us, but we still cling to Him, it is already a powerful testimony without one word being spoken. Then people can see that we don’t just belong to a faith or religion. No, it’s a real lifestyle of a relationship with a person. It’s personal and it’s heart to heart.

We can encourage each other with decorated Bible verses and messages. Please hear my heart, there is nothing wrong with spreading the gospel in this way. But when you want to see a powerful testimony, look at someone that clings to God, no matter what has crossed their path. Then we move from superficial to real.

But where is He?

In these kinds of circumstances, we frequently hear: “but then where is your God?”. Some people even ask blaming questions like: “but you serve the Lord, why does your circumstances look like this?” or “how can you still believe?”. In verse 9, the daughters are asking exactly this question. How can she still seek Him? What makes Him better than gods of other faiths and systems?

What is your beloved More than another beloved, O fairest among women? What is your beloved More than another beloved, That you so charge us? (Songs 5:9)

She testifies

As an answer to the question of the daughters, the girl which represents the bride of Christ starts to testify. It is this testimony of her that we will be studying. She testifies who the Bridegroom is from her own personal perspective.

The result

Without running too far ahead, I would really like to share on the end result of her testimony. The daughters were stirred up by her lifestyle of total surrender and love for her Bridegroom. The daughters are those that are not yet walking in deep intimacy with the Bridegroom. Because of what they have seen in her life, they also want to seek Him.

Where has your beloved gone, O fairest among women? Where has your beloved turned aside, That we may seek him with you? (Songs 6:1)

May we each have a personal revelation of I AM. I pray that it will overwhelm us so that we may seek His heart in every circumstance. That we will always long for Him and not just for relieve from what we are experiencing.

And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, and they did not love their lives to the death. (Rev 12:11)

The next message will deal with her first description of Him: “My beloved…”
