Pomegranate pips

It is in him that all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge are hidden. (Col 2:3)

I just love the look and taste of pomegranates.  I have literally hundreds of photos of pomegranates just waiting to become a painting.  One of these days I will get to them all (by the way, that’s what I keep telling myself when I take another photo).

Nevertheless, pomegranates are a very special fruit and have fascinated people over many centuries.

We read of this gorgeous fruit quite a few times in Scripture and it has become the symbol fruit of Song of Songs.

But why?

We read the first time of pomegranates in the book of Exodus where the priest’s robe had to be adorned at the seam with pomegranates and bells.  Then we read later on how the Tabernacle had to be decorated with pomegranates.  This fruit was very specifically chosen by God to beautify the very place that points to the dwelling place of the Holy Spirit in our hearts.  The Tabernacle, the Old Testament dwelling place of God, is a type or symbol of the spiritual dwelling place of the Holy Spirit within the hearts of men.  I will explore deeper into this in a future post.

When I open a pomegranate, I try not to use a knife.  I like the natural edges as I try to break it open without squashing any of the pips.  Once the fruit is open, those pips will lie neatly tucked in rows just waiting to be tasted.  I then take them out, one by one, and will savour the taste of each pip individually.

As I was doing this the other day, Holy Spirit spoke to me about the treasures in His Word.  To get to them, we also have to break through the outer layer (many times of what we think we know).

Once we have broken through the layer of knowledge and self, the Godly treasures are lying there, just waiting for you to discover them one by one.

The key here is ONE BY ONE.

There is no use to put all the pips into your mouth all at once – it spoils all the fun.

We have to take out the treasure (or new truth), taste it, chew it and swallow it until it becomes part of us.  Then only we must move over to the next one.  Otherwise it will just be a mungle-jungle of what we think we taste that gets stuck in our heads (tree of knowledge) and not in our hearts (tree of life).

By learning a new truth, applying it and living it, we will become mature and we will have our own testimonies of Godly revelation.

Father, we long for your treasures.  Help us to patiently and diligently seek truth and to apply it to our daily walk with You.  Amen.
