He is the Truth

By Yolandie Mostert (July 2023)

His legs are set on bases of fine gold (Songs 5:15b)

The previous facet dealt with the steadfast certainty represented by legs and hips. The eternal throne of Jesus Christ is resting on pedestals of pure gold. These pedestals are symbolic for the truth. The word truth appears more than 200 times in the Bible. I wish there was enough time and space to share more in depth about truth. When I did my first study on truth, on everything it entails and our required reaction to it, I was astonished.

The Hebrew word for truth is ’emeth and it means according to the Strongs dictionary: firmness, faithfulness, sureness and stability.

It’s not only the pedestals of our King that is the truth, He is the truth Himself. It is who He is.

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. (John 14:6)

So let’s be practical; how will we describe the truth? In its most simplified form it is what we believe and how we live out our beliefs. But it’s also more than that. The truth gives certainty and stability. Truth forms a foundation for our whole life, just like a statue requires a firm pedestal to not topple over.

Should we be asked: ‘how does a person worship God?’, we would be able to give quite a lot of answers. Many of the answers would include worshipping methods and theological concepts. Jesus gives us a very short answer. How must the Father be worshipped? In spirit and in truth.

God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth. (John 4:24)

We have to live through the spirit and be led by the Spirit of God. This is the law of the spirit of life. I will elaborate more on this in a later message. For now my focus is the truth. Jesus is the truth, so yes, He is the only way to the Father. But this more than just a fact or something that sounds nice. The fact that Jesus is the truth, calls us to a life of truth. The truth is so important in the Kingdom of heaven that the Spirit of God is also called the Spirit of truth. You can read this in John chapters 14, 15 and 16.

Just like Jesus is the truth, we as the combined assembly, the ecclesia, is also called the foundation of truth.

… the church of the living God, the pillar and foundation of the truth (1 Tim 3:15)

Everything we believe and live out form the pillars of our life. The pedestals of Jesus are fine gold, in other words, it’s pure and untainted truth. Our pillars, on the other hand, have become contaminated. Over ages untruths and misbeliefs crept into our believe system and life. The only way to clean this up is to replace each lie, one by one, with truth. If we truly love Jesus as the truth, we will pursue and love the truth, regardless of how difficult it may be to admit that our pedestals are not so pure as we would like to believe.

In Zechariah 8:19 we are instructed to love the truth and in Jeremiah 5:1 God was asking if there was at least one person that was searching for truth.

I recall listening to a striking explanation about the truth. If we are walking down a street and the truth approaches us, what is our reaction? Do we run towards the truth and welcomes it in our life or do we push it away? All of us want to answer that we welcome truth in our lives, but that’s not true. How many times do we come across spiritual revelation, knowledge and information where we or our ancestors walked in idolatry or sinful things. I often hear people say ‘but is this thing now also sin?’. Can it be that truth approached us and we pushed it away because it made us uncomfortable or because it required a change in our life that we were not prepared to make.

What is the reaction required of us when we are confronted with new knowledge and information? Certainly we should not accept everything as truth. I believe a wise approach is to hold the truth in your hand and examine it from all sides. Go and do your own research. Don’t believe everything everyone is teaching. Find out for yourself. Read the Bible in context, not a verse here and a verse there. Read up on the history and background of things. Don’t be biased in your research, look at both sides. Take it to the Lord. Pray for insight and also pray for a willing heart. If whatever crossed your path, is confirmed as truth, decide to love it, no matter how tough it is. In the case of false information, heresy and scriptures out of context, reject it as a lie.

We tend to overcomplicate things. There are only two kingdoms: the kingdom of light and the kingdom of darkness. Nothing in between. Truth belongs to the kingdom of light and lies to the kingdom of darkness. Everything between pure truth and lies, are lies in a watered-down format. Decide: is this the whole pure truth or is this a bit of truth mixed with lies. Then it’s a lie and it doesn’t belong to our King Jesus. He is the full truth and there is no mixture in His pure gold pedestals.

What happens when we don’t accept the truth and learn to love it? We find the answer in 1 Thessalonians 2 and it’s a dangerous answer that should fill us with reference and a holy fear for the truth. If truth keeps on approaching us and we keep on pushing it away, we run the risk of the Father sending a strong delusion to us so that we will believe the lie. This is an extremely dangerous place to be. It means that you will look down at your pedestal and you will see gold. You will believe that you are seeing gold, even though it’s a different colour, let say grey for example. Someone else will see the grey and point it out to you, but the delusion has caused a veil that makes it impossible to see the error. Such a person will insist that whatever he or she believes is the truth and will even strongly defend and argue their point.

… because they did not receive the love of the truth, that they might be saved. And for this reason God will send them strong delusion, that they should believe the lie . (2 Thess 2:10-11)

Can this situation be restored? I believe so, but it will cost deep introspection and honesty. When we call out in desperation to be rescued, God will hear us. But desperation is needed. As long as we still want to reason or justify, we are not desperate. It will also be to our benefit to constantly ask the Holy Spirit in humility to expose the lies in our lives. Let us live a life of replacing the lie with truth.

What is the opposite of the truth? We will immediately answer: the lie. This is correct, but the Bible goes even deeper. The kingdom of darkness and lies opposes the kingdom of light and truth. It also copies the Spirit of Truth. The Bible calls this false spirit the spirit of error or some translation calls him the spirit of deceit or delusion.

We are of God. He who knows God hears us; he who is not of God does not hear us. By this we know the spirit of truth and the spirit of error. (1 Joh 4:6)

If the lie where to approach us in its blatant form, it would’ve been easy to recognise and reject. But now it comes in a veiled form: delusions and error. Each time just one small error or one small deviation. Imagine how many of these error and untruths are stacked over the ages. By God’s grace He is not revealing all the lies in our lives in one event; I think we would’ve collapsed in shock. He exposes these lies over a period of time to allow us to implement the truth. Then after a few years of cleansing and replacing of lies, we can look back and where we were and how we believed will feel light years away. This is how it should be. But this will only happen if we embrace and learn to love truth. Sometimes it’s very difficult to lay things down that became woven into our cultures. People around us gets mad and criticise.

Do we love the Truth, Jesus Christ, enough to be willing for our pedestal to be changed to look like His – pure gold, without a grain of untruth.

Before closing this message, I want to issue a serious warning. Truth and lie are not things to take lightly – it has eternal destination implications for us. No form of lie will be allowed in the New Jerusalem. This city belongs to the kingdom of the Lamb of God who is the lamp of the city. He is the truth and will not give access to anyone that practices lying. Take note of the verb: practices. To be able to practice lies, we must first believe the lie.

But there shall by no means enter it anything that defiles, or causes an abomination or a lie, but only those who are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life. (Rev 21:27)

In this verse those whose names are written the Lamb’s Book of Life are placed directly opposite to those that practises lies. We truly need to get rid of each lie, error, delusion and deception in our lives with zeal. There is no more time to play, to reason or to wait and see.

I’m closing this message with a worship to the Bridegroom.

Gird Your sword upon Your thigh, O Mighty One, with Your glory and Your majesty. And in Your majesty ride prosperously because of truth, humility, and righteousness (Ps 45:4-5a)

Lord Jesus, the Truth whom we love: ride triumphantly for the cause of truth! Strap your sword and destroy each and every form of untruth in our lives.
