He is the Head

Part 8 of the series on Who is the Bridegroom

His head is like [precious] gold. (Songs 5:11)

In the previous facet of who Jesus is, we’ve talked about Him as the Conqueror over hell, the graved and death and that He is seated at the right hand of the Father. From that position He rules as King until all His enemies are destroyed.

Just to refresh your memory, the young girl in Song of Songs is still testifying about who the Bridegroom is. Hidden in rich symbolism, she tells who Jesus Christ is for her personally. She doesn’t talk about something she had read or heard. She talks about her daily experiences from a deep walk with Him. He is her Beloved, the lover of her soul. She knows Him as the Holy One and is deeply in love and in awe of His holiness. Anything unholy, no matter how high in regard held by the world, looks pale and inferior. She experiences His Light on a daily basis and knows how it exposes the darkness in order for her to deal with it through repentance. The fact that He is the One that treads the winepress, fills her with awe and reference. Not with fear for punishment, but with the deep holy fear of the Lord.

Every facet is a personal experience and as we move closer into the heart of the Father, the Son reveals even more of Himself to us. Obedience and love are the two required keys. To the extent that we walk in this, He will reveal Himself to us.

In verse 11 she continues: “His head is like precious gold”. The head of gold symbolises the headship of Jesus Christ above all. I want to repeat this: He is head over ALL.

Because He has conquered, He is seated above all principalities, powers and might and all dominion. His Name is much higher and more powerful than any other name or title that might exist. It includes both the physical and spiritual realm. Also not just for the current age we are currently living in, but also in the next, in other words the millennium. Jesus Christ is the Head above all things. The Father subjected everything to His feet.

… and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, far above all principality and power and might and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in that which is to come. And He put all things under His feet, and gave Him to be head over all things to the church, (Eph 1:20b-22)

The greater our believe that Jesus Christ is really head over all, the easier we will be able to stand in His authority. I believe the body of Christ will be much more effective if we can truly understand that He has also gained the victory. He is already the head over all. There is no authority, principality, power or strength that can stand against Jesus Christ.

Listen to this Scripture in Colossians 2:9-10.

For in Him all the fullness of Deity (the Godhead) dwells in bodily form [completely expressing the divine essence of God]. And in Him you have been made complete [achieving spiritual stature through Christ], and He is the head over all rule and authority [of every angelic and earthly power]. (Col 2:9-10)

The fullness of the essence of God dwells in Jesus Christ. Because we are in Him, we have the same fulness. And then Paul reminds us again that the One who dwells in us is head over every principality and power.

In the Name of Jesus

Ek want to spend a moment on what it means when we do something in the Name of Jesus. This is not my illustration; I’m borrowing it from someone else. It really explains in a practical and understandable manner how it works when we act in His Name.

A dad has two boys and sends the youngest son to the eldest with an instruction to mow the lawn. The youngest brother has now authority over the eldest. If he went out of own accord, the eldest brother wouldn’t have listened. But now he starts his sentence with “daddy said that you must mow the lawn”. It is therefore not he that gives the instruction, it’s the father.

The same sentence in spiritual terms would’ve sounded something like: “Brother, I come in the name of dad and give you an instruction to mow the lawn”. The youngest brother acted under direct authority of his father. He heard the instruction his father gave and executed it. He doesn’t act on his own authority, which anyways account for little, but acts on the authority seated in his father.

Spiritually it works exactly the same. The ‘name and claim’ movement really made prayers and actions in the Name of Jesus very cheap. They teach that any person that just says the Name of Jesus can receive and do whatever they want. It almost uses the Name of Jesus like a magic wand.

The key to action in the Name of Jesus Christ is that we have to be in His will and that He gave us the instruction. Whenever we are certain of these two things there is no authority or principality that will be able to resist us.

The greater our true understanding of the victory and headship of Jesus, the stronger we will operate in His Name. We act in the Name of the One who is head of everything. Our exploits are not just in a small name. His Name is greater than every other name. We just have to ensure that we are hearing directly from Him and that we act in His will. Then we can stand in boldness and authority.

Authority

Luke chapter 7 describes an event that is a very good illustration of how authority through faith works. A Roman centurion’s servant was dying. Jesus was asked to heal the servant. This man didn’t deem himself worthy that Jesus could enter his house and therefore met Jesus on the way. Listen to what he says:

Therefore I did not even consider myself worthy to come to You. But just speak a word, and my slave will be healed. For I also am a man subject to authority, with soldiers under me; and I say to this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes, and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes, and to my slave, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.” (Luk 7:7-8)

What is he saying? Because he is the head of all his soldiers, he gives instructions in full confidence that they will follow his orders. He understood how authority and headship works. Because Jesus is also something with authority, He will be able to speak a word and it will happen. He had full confidence in the authority of Jesus Christ.

Now when Jesus heard this, He was amazed at him, and turned and said to the crowd that was following Him, “I say to you, not even in Israel have I found such great faith [as this man’s].” When the messengers who had been sent returned to the house, they found the slave in good health. (Luk 7:9-10)

Jesus was astonished at this man’s faith. How much more will be able to stand in faith based on the Scriptures we have read about the Headship of Jesus. When we know that we are in His will and we have received the instruction from Him, we can operate in exactly the same faith as the Roman Centurion. We don’t have to fear anything in the kingdom of darkness. The enemy wants us to believe that he is the head and that we are powerless against his authority. It’s a lie. Jesus Christ is head of all. We just have to ensure that we remain in Him.

Let us ask the Holy Spirit of a deeper revelation of Jesus Christ as the Head. The greater our understanding, the more we will dare in faith in Him.
