He is the Eternal One

His legs are pillars of marble (Songs 5:15a)

This facet of the character of our King should fill us with immense peace and certainty in the uncertain times we are living in. Legs and hips symbolise steadfastness. Strong and sturdy legs will remain steadfast no matter what.

The word “marble” comes from the Greek word mármaros, meaning ‘shining stone’. We are all familiar with the white stone decorated with stylish grey strokes. The most expensive marble is of course pure white, without any spots or colour. This reminds me of the bride of the King. After all the sanctification, repentance, laying down of the flesh and washing in the Blood of the Lamb, the bride will be without spot or wrinkle (Eph 5:27). Jesus Christ is returning for a pure and spotless bride.

The steadfast legs of Jesus, the Bridegroom, are being compared to pillars of marble. Pillars stand firm; it’s what they are made for. We have a sure certainty that His throne will remain and nothing will ever be able to change that. It’s really important for us to truly believe this as truth. This will determine our stance on every situation. Do we really believe that He has never lost control? Our King is never shocked by events. Nothing surprises Him. He is never caught off guard. He knows the end even before it began.

Doesn’t this just fill you with even more admiration and worship for who He is? He deserves all our worship and praise and so much more.

Listen to what the Father says of the Jesus:

But to the Son He says: “Your throne, o God, is forever and ever; a scepter of righteousness is the scepter of Your kingdom. (Heb 1:8)

The throne of Jesus Christ will remain forever. His Kingdom will never cease to exist. A sceptre represents the type of rulership. The sceptre of Jesus is a righteous one.

On this note I quickly want to talk about His righteousness. Jesus is always just with everyone. He never chooses side. He doesn’t have favourites. If you don’t agree with me on this point, just read the conversation between Jesus and Petrus recorded in Matthew 16. First Jesus confirms Peter as the rock on which He will build His church. Directly after that Jesus rebukes Peter as a stumbling block for focusing on his emotions instead of the Kingdom. The statements of Jesus are always just. This is a nice sentiment, especially when we are on the receiving end as the party requiring a righteous verdict. But He is also righteous when we are the guilty party. Yes, He forgives and is merciful, but He remains just. His eternal throne is chiselled from marble, shining pure white with righteousness.

I want to encourage you. It doesn’t matter what the economy looks like. It doesn’t matter who is the ruling political party. It doesn’t matter what evil agendas are being driven by the kingdom of darkness. It doesn’t matter if it looks like there is no future for our children. It doesn’t matter what lies ahead. In the midst of everything there is an eternal, righteous throne and in that we can find peace.

Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty, God has shone forth. May our God come and not keep silent; Fire devours before Him, And around Him a mighty tempest rages. (Ps 50:2-3)

Our place is IN HIM. In Him is peace and security. From that place it’s possible to believe and proclaim the promises of light and truth. Whenever we experience agitation, fear and uncertainty, it might just be that we’ve moved one small step away from the throne. There is a furious storm around Him, but in Him it’s quiet. From time to time each one of us need to determine our position. Am I still in Him? Or did the events in the world moved my focus from the throne to the storm? Then a decision of the will is required in conjunction with more worship time in His presence to move us back into His perfect peace of pure white marble security.

We cannot talk about the wonderful, eternal throne of Jesus without looking at our own concept of eternity. Do we really grasp that we will live forever? Every single human on earth is an eternal living spirit. Our choices on earth determine our eternity. Now on this note a lot of people are happy to say: ‘I will live forever in heaven’. Do you realise it’s not just about heaven or hell? The crux of the matter is a living relationship with our Heavenly Father, with Jesus Christ, the Son as well as with the Spirit of the Living God. We don’t just live to be able to go to heaven. At the end of the book of Revelation we see how the New Jerusalem will be coming to earth. Our focus must now be our preparation for the thousand-year reign of peace. This time period can be seen as a bridge between the current age and eternity. During this period Jesus will establish His physical throne on earth from which He will reign. Those that dwell IN HIM, not everyone, will rule as kings. But not only in the thousand years of peace. Also in eternity. We are now in training and part of this training is to develop a concept of eternity.

And he showed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding from the throne of God and of the Lamb. In the middle of its street, and on either side of the river, was the tree of life, which bore twelve fruits, each tree yielding its fruit every month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. And there shall be no more curse, but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it, and His servants shall serve Him. They shall see His face, and His name shall be on their foreheads. There shall be no night there: They need no lamp nor light of the sun, for the Lord God gives them light. And they shall reign forever and ever.  (Rev 22:1-5)

Therefore, brethren, be even more diligent to make your call and election sure, for if you do these things you will never stumble; for so an entrance will be supplied to you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.  (2 Pet 1:10-11)

Today I want to pray these words of Peter. “Father, help us to be diligent in making our calling in You certain. You promised that we will then not stumble. Thank you that we can make a decision to not focus on circumstances, but to focus on the eternal throne of Your Son. Father, You are our help and in You alone we find perfect peace.”
