He is Light (Part 4 of Who is the Bridegroom)

By Yolandie Mostert, 7 April 2023

My beloved is [dazzling] white (Songs 5:10)

Light and holiness are the themes of the next portion of the testimony of the girl in Song of Songs. She represents the bride of Christ. The word dazzling represents the Light and white speaks of His holiness. Two topics that don’t get much preached about. The Light confronts everything that is darkness, also shadows. I don’t think people really like it that the Light confronts their darkness. The same with holiness. It’s almost as if the modern Christian move with unease around topics like Light and holiness. The Light changes us. It raises up the standard of the Holy One of Israel and calls us unto holiness. The Light overwhelms the darkness and causes the source of darkness within man to raise up in rebellion with typical statements like: “don’t judge me”. Each time when we bow before the Light and get rid of the darkness in us through sincere repentance, we can climb one step higher up on the mountain of the Lord, the mountain of holiness.

Who may ascend into the hill of the LORD? Or who may stand in His holy place? (Ps 24:3)

(There is so much to say about Light and holiness. I will divide this message into two, otherwise the recordings become too long)

He is the Light

In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. (Joh 1:4)

Let’s turn to the book of Revelation to see just how radiant and dazzling our Bridegroom is. We read in chapter 1 verse 16 that His face was shining like the sun in all its power at midday. That is blinding light. When we compare the appearance of the angel who rolled away the stone, the comparison of a lightning bolt gives us a good idea. As with every facet of His character, we have to pray for revelation by the Holy Spirit. Otherwise this will just be theory. Remember that I’ve said in the first message that we will only be able to receive a revelation of Jesus Christ if the Father reveals the Son to us. And there are conditions that we have to meet.

Light doesn’t just shine from Jesus. He is the essence, the source of Light. We find a Scripture in Revelation that reveals this truth. The Lamb of God is the lamp of the New Jerusalem. He is the source.

And the city has no need of the sun nor of the moon to give light to it, for the glory (splendor, radiance) of God has illumined it, and the Lamb is its lamp and light. (Rev 21:23)

Light exposes darkness

One of the things that the Light does is to cause darkness to manifest as it is being exposed. The further we are from a source of light, the more difficult to distinguish colours and shapes. As we move closer to the light source, we can see whether a shirt is blue or grey. Even closer we can see there is a black oil stain on the shirt. Another step closer and we can see the smaller stains. When the light shines in full force on the shirt, we are able to see the creases, dust specs and even the shade of tread used. It works the same way in the spirit. For someone that follows from afar, it will be easy to think that there is no darkness within them. That they live a good and acceptable life. But when such a person moves just a bit closer to the source of Light, darkness will be manifested and exposed. That is the essence and character of the Light – it exposes darkness and cause it to manifest. When the person then repents and gets washed by the Blood of the Lamb, the darkness will become light. After that the person will move even closer to the source and the process will repeat itself. Initially the light will expose the ‘big’ things, later the hidden secrets of the heart and even later the motives of the heart.

But all things that are exposed are made manifest by the light, for whatever makes manifest is light. Therefore He says: “Awake, you who sleep, Arise from the dead, And Christ will give you light.” (Eph 5:13-14)

Let us not shy away from this characteristic of the Light. But let’s welcome it and even fall in love with it. Ask Him to shine His Light into the deepest chambers of your being and to expose the hidden things that you’re not even aware of.

(Joh 3:20-21)  For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed. But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be clearly seen, that they have been done in God.

Light is Life

Another aspect of Light is the Life that is contained in it. The Light gives live. The closer we move to the source of Light, Jesus Christ himself, the more live will be within us.

Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life. (Joh 8:12)

Revelation leads to worship

One of the things that happens to us when we receive a greater revelation of who Jesus really is, is that we will fall in worship before Him. This is what happened to John on the island of Patmos. Remember how John was leaning against Jesus’ chest during their last Passover together. He was very close to Jesus. Years later, when John saw Jesus, his friend, it was a totally different story. This time Jesus showed Himself to John in the fullness of His glory and John fell at His feet as though dead. I truly believe that we will see less sin and double mindedness in the church when more people can get a greater revelation of who Jesus Christ really is. May more and more people fall in worship before the Light in a deep understanding of His holiness.

I’m closing with this verse:

For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light  (Eph 5:8)

It’s impossible to not change when you have tasted the Life within the Light. We are being called to walk like people that came into direct contact with the source of Light. Jesus Christ – the Light of the world.

In the next message we will discuss His holiness.
